The 3G Skills
Challenge Project delivers Skills for Life training to unemployed BME people aged
16+ who live in Greater Manchester.
The project delivers
the following activities:
- Bilingual promotion of
Skills for Life to BME people across Greater Manchester
- 1-2-1 Assessment for
learning and preparation of Individual Learning Plans identifying personal and learning
goals including confidence building
- ESOL, literacy and
numeracy in bite-sized modules, some classes women only. All classes
have an underpinning theme. For example: "Employability",
"Enterprise", "Language and Maths for the Construction
Trade", "Life Support" (e.g. preparing to visit a GP, going to school
parents evenings, disputing bills and managing finances etc), "Positive
Citizenship" (e.g. UK law & order, public services, local and national governance
etc).
- ICT include
introduction to using a computer and using the internet, and is available stand alone or
as an embedded process within the above themed learning.
- A programme of positive
experiences reinforce learning and confidence building, for example, attending careers
fairs, undertaking construction taster courses, visiting local schools, attending public
meetings of the Council.
- Moving On exit
programme celebrates the achievements of learners and help them to plan their next
activities to continue their learning and use their new skills.
The project is delivered at our centre
in Longsight Business Park. The funding for the above project will come to an end in
December 2007.
City College
Manchester (CCM):
We have been working CCM as a franchise
partner for over 3 years and have delivered ESOL to over 500 women. Since August 2007, we
have had NVQ's added to our course profile. Previously we have also delivered courses such
as beauty therapy and garment making classes up to level 2 which we have used as an
engagement activity to progress learners on to more structured training. This partnership
has helped us review and enhance our quality assurance procedures. We have achieved
excellent retention and achievement rate. Currently we have 95% retention & 98%
achievement rate in our ESOL courses.
Progress Employability:
Funded by Job Centre ESF co finance
funding we are currently delivering a project called progress employability. The project
delivers 13 week programme to people from BME communities on IS, JSA and IB. The programme
includes:
a. Short courses such as Health & Safety
b. CV writing
c. Confidence building
d. Interview skills
e. ESOL / Basic Skills
f. Job search
g. Work placements
Since the project has started in March 2007 we have delivered programme to over 30 people
and have helped at least 8 of them get a job. The others have progressed on to further
trainings.
IAG :
For 3 years we have run IAG and
translation sessions to help people with various issues from choosing the right course or
career path 2 filling in application forms. This service was initially funded by Community
Chest and then NLDCF. Over 500 Asian and Arabic women have benefited from this service. As
part of it we have been working towards our Matrix accreditation and are due our final
interview in September 07.
ESOL 4
Employed:
Funded by LSC ESF co-finance funding. The project focuses on engaging and training
employed members of BME communities on ESOL.
To enrol on a free ESOL class you need to be 16+ and living or working in Greater
Manchester.
You will need to attend an ESOL class for up to 4 hours a week for 12 weeks. The classes
can be organised at your workplace if there is a group of 12 or more.
